Google Unveils Gemini 4 Argon with Frontier Performance Capabilities
Google has unveiled Gemini 4 Argon, its next-generation flagship artificial intelligence model. This comes after weeks of signals that the long-awaited system was nearing release.
The announcement was made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai on X, where he said there had been 'lots of discussion' about the company's next model and that he wanted to give an early look 'as soon as possible'. He introduced Argon as a model showing frontier performance in complex workflows, cyber defense, and software engineering.
The announcement follows comments from Google DeepMind chief Koray Kavukcuoglu, who said Gemini 4 was in post-training and that Google intended to release an early version 'as soon as possible'. He added that the company hoped to launch it 'much earlier' than the end of the year.
Argon is being positioned as a major step up from Google's previous flagship systems. In benchmarks published by Google, Argon led GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's Claude models on most of the tests shown.
