Google Unveils Gemini 4 Flagship Model Amid AI Race
Google has announced its Gemini 4 flagship AI model, dubbed 'Argon', after months of delays. The new model is larger than Google's previous line of advanced models and is designed for complex workloads.
According to a company spokesperson, Argon is comparable to frontier models like Astra and Opus on key coding and cyber benchmarks. However, it still lags behind in certain areas, including two of the four coding-related benchmarks.
The release of Argon comes after Google overhauled its DeepMind AI lab, with founder Demis Hassabis stepping aside and several leaders leaving the company. This move has caused delays to previous models, including Gemini 3.5 Pro, which was originally scheduled for release in June but has been scrapped.
Google's new model is part of a broader effort to catch up to rivals Anthropic and OpenAI in the AI race. While Argon has posted better marks than Astra and Opus on certain industry benchmarks, Google is still highlighting its cost advantage compared to competitor models.
