Google Unveils Offline Translation Device Using Raspberry Pi 5
Google has unveiled an innovative device that redefines offline translation - the Gemma Translator. This compact, handheld device utilizes a Raspberry Pi 5 and processes voice translations entirely on-device, eliminating the need for internet connectivity.
The Gemma Translator's software stack is where its true innovation lies. It runs using the Gemma 4 E2B model via LiteRT-LM, achieving efficient translation speeds while using minimal RAM. The device also utilizes Moonshine for speech recognition and Kokoro for text-to-speech, resulting in processing speeds up to five times faster than alternatives like Whisper Tiny.
The device's design is also noteworthy, with a bold yellow and black 3D-printed case that houses an 8 GB Raspberry Pi 5, a 480×320 touchscreen, microphone, speaker, push-to-talk buttons, and a rotary encoder. The design files are open-source, allowing anyone with a 3D printer to recreate it.
