Google Unveils Redesigned Thompson Center Plans
Google has unveiled new renderings of its plans to redesign the Thompson Center in Chicago. The tech giant acquired the building from the state for $105 million in July 2022, with a promise to honor its unique look and legacy.
The proposed redesign focuses on the publicly accessible spaces around the center and the atrium. A key feature will be a wider central opening under the 17-story atrium, which will include a staircase with built-in seating. The plaza surrounding the building will become a hub for community programming and cultural events, while also offering more food and retail options.
The renovation plans also include new art installations, such as a 30-foot sculpture by artist Sanford Biggers and a mural painted by Chicago students. Additionally, the building will be fully connected to the CTA, making it easier for employees and visitors to navigate the area.
Google aims to complete the redesign and open its doors to both employees and the public in 2028.
