Google has rolled out its latest AI-powered weather forecasting model, called WeatherNext 3. This upgrade is significant because it's trained on live, global geostationary satellite data, allowing for hourly forecasts with up to 5-kilometer resolution.

This represents a major leap forward from the previous WeatherNext 2 model, which was based on numerical weather prediction (NWP) models that carry a six-hour data lag. This lag can lead to biases in fast-changing variables like rain or surface temperature.

The new model's ability to generate forecasts every hour, grounded in the most recent satellite observations available, is a significant improvement over its predecessor. Google has published a paper detailing the changes and advancements of WeatherNext 3.
