Google has announced an upgrade to its weather forecasting model called WeatherNext 3. This new system uses artificial intelligence and live satellite observations to refresh forecasts every hour, potentially allowing Google products to react more quickly when storms or other conditions change.

The company says that WeatherNext 3 can generate a new forecast every hour, compared with roughly six-hour update gaps common with existing forecasting systems. It also offers substantially more detailed geographic information, mapping temperature and moisture conditions at resolutions as fine as 5 kilometers.

This makes its weather picture up to five times sharper than the previous model, WeatherNext 2. The system was developed through Google DeepMind and Google Research, combining AI with raw satellite observations rather than relying exclusively on traditional forecasting techniques.
