Google Unveils Sheets Canvas: Interactive Mini-Apps from Any Spreadsheet

Google has unveiled Sheets Canvas, a new feature that allows users to transform any existing Google Sheets spreadsheet into an interactive mini-application without coding. The tool is powered by Gemini and can generate custom visual interfaces for tasks such as Kanban boards, financial dashboards, or seating charts.

The feature was announced by Eric Birnbaum, Director of Product Management for Google Sheets. According to Birnbaum, the goal of Sheets Canvas is to help users 'see what you need to know from your data quickly' without having to struggle with formulas and code.

Sheets Canvas operates through a two-way sync between the canvas interface and the underlying spreadsheet data, allowing changes made in one to be immediately reflected in the other. This is a key differentiator for Sheets Canvas compared to earlier Gemini-in-Sheets features that generated static outputs.

The feature is currently available to eligible users, including Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers, as well as business and enterprise customers with Gemini enabled in their accounts. However, there are some limitations: the tool is web-only at present, and it can only draw from a single spreadsheet's data.
