Google Unveils Thompson Center Revamp with New Public Art and Atrium Redesign

Google has unveiled new interior renderings for the Thompson Center's reimagined atrium as part of its redevelopment. The project, led by Prime | Capri Interests, aims to enhance the building as a community destination while honoring its signature design. Architecture firm Jahn/ is returning to lead the high-tech renovation, which includes strategic design improvements and new elements such as a heightened entry colonnade and three levels of covered terraces with more natural light.

The interior design, curated by Google in collaboration with Architecture Plus Information (A+I), aims to create an inspiring space offering unique amenities for the Loop. The central opening beneath the 17-story atrium has been expanded, featuring a cascading staircase integrated with terraced seating and retail offerings.

Outside of the building, Google has commissioned artist Sanford Biggers to create a new sculpture that honors the Loop's rich history of public art. Biggers' sculpture, Vector, is a 30-foot tall structure reimagining traditional quilt patterns as a hyper-dynamic, tilted accordion. The artwork incorporates Illinois history and features glazed terracotta tile patterns inspired by historic 19th-century quilts.

Construction on the Thompson Center has been ongoing since 2024 with general contractor Clark Construction, with plans to open in 2028. Google's redevelopment aims to bring a curated mix of quality food, distinctive retail, and space for seasonal events, making it a vibrant community destination.
