Google Wallet replaces physical wallets with digital passes
Google Wallet has evolved significantly since its rebranding in 2022, transforming from a payments app into a comprehensive platform designed to replace the contents of a physical wallet. The 'Save to phone' button has become a key feature, enabling users to store a variety of passes, from boarding passes to insurance cards, all in one place.
The platform now supports travel and transit passes, including boarding passes and train tickets, which update in real-time with gate changes or delays. Health and insurance providers have also integrated with Google Wallet, allowing users to store ID cards for offline access, ensuring critical information is always available even without internet connectivity.
One of the standout features is the ability to store miscellaneous cards, such as library cards or gym memberships, through a simple photo capture process. Google's AI reads the barcode or QR code, converting it into a digital pass. This functionality addresses the 'junk-drawer problem' by providing a universal solution for storing various small cards.
The final frontier for Google Wallet is the digital driver's license. As of late 2025, the platform supports mobile driver's licenses (mDLs) in several states, meeting federal verification standards. Google is also testing a beta feature that turns a US passport into a digital ID, useful for domestic identity verification and TSA checks, though it does not replace the physical passport for international travel.
