Google Wearables to Become More Sensitive with New Fall Detection Approach
Google is working on a new approach to fall detection on wearables. Instead of waiting for someone to hit the ground, a watch could become more sensitive when the wearer is in a higher-risk situation. This would be done by analyzing various factors such as walking while looking at a smartphone or carrying something.
The wearable would use accelerometer, gyroscope, and barometer data, along with machine learning algorithms, to determine an adjusted threshold for fall detection. For example, if someone is walking quickly after waking up from sleep, the watch could make fall detection more sensitive. Exercise fatigue may also be taken into account, as well as how long someone has been exercising.
Google's patent suggests that this approach would provide more context before a fall occurs, making fall detection less about a fixed impact threshold and more about understanding what the wearer is doing beforehand. However, it's worth noting that this technology is still in the development stage and may not necessarily be implemented on future Pixel Watches.
