Google Wins Antitrust Battle Over AI-Generated Search Results
A US federal judge has dismissed antitrust lawsuits brought by Chegg and Penske Media Corporation against Google, ruling that the search giant did not unlawfully use its market power in AI-generated search results.
The two companies had argued that Google was exploiting its dominant position in search by using publishers' material in AI-generated results without compensating them, effectively reducing the need for users to visit original websites.
US District Judge Amit Mehta rejected this argument, concluding that publishers' expectation of being directed to their websites in exchange for making content available to Google did not amount to an agreement protected by antitrust law.
The judge acknowledged the financial pressures facing online publishers as search technology evolves but said antitrust law was not a substitute for legislative action addressing the economic consequences of technological innovation.
