Google Wins Antitrust Battle Over AI-Powered Search Features
A federal judge has dismissed two antitrust lawsuits filed by Chegg and Penske Media Corporation against Google, which accused the tech giant of abusing its monopoly power through AI-powered search features.
The lawsuits claimed that Google was coercing publishers into supplying content for its AI Overviews for free, or risk being removed from search results. However, US District Judge Amit Mehta disagreed with these claims, stating that an expectation of receiving search traffic is not an agreement and is simply how a general search engine works.
The court acknowledged the situation faced by publishers but ruled that antitrust laws cannot replace legislative decisions addressing the economic impact of new innovations. This ruling comes as websites continue to see the effects of Google's AI-powered search overhaul, with traffic to news publishers and small websites taking a steep dive.
