Google Wins Approval for Dublin Data Center Expansion
Google has secured planning permission to expand its data center in Dublin's Grange Castle Business Park, Ireland. The company had faced opposition from South Dublin County Council, which initially denied the application in August due to concerns about the site's electricity network capacity and lack of on-site renewable energy.
The council cited 'insufficient capacity in the electricity network (grid) and the lack of significant on-site renewable energy to power the data center' as reasons for refusal. However, Google argued that it had secured a grid connection in 2021 and lodged an appeal with An Coimisiún Pleanála.
The appeals board has now approved the expansion, subject to conditions including the demonstration of power purchase agreements and use of renewable fuel for backup generators. Additionally, Google must show evidence of promoting sustainable transportation options for employees and improving the ecological value of the site.
