Google's €13 Billion Data Centre Expansion Sparks Concerns in Rural Finland
Google's massive investment in Finland's data centre expansion is bringing both opportunities and concerns to the rural town of Muhos. The tech giant plans to build new data centres as part of its €13 billion ($15 billion) investment in Finland over the next two years, making it the single biggest investment in Europe.
Joni Pitkanen, a 36-year-old farmer, is preparing for life with a new neighbour, Google's data centre just kilometres away from his farm. 'The project is so massive that it's basically hard to really grasp, even though we're right here on the sidelines,' he said.
While some residents are excited about the jobs and investment, others are concerned about the energy consumption and environmental impact of the centres. Finnish Supervisory Agency (LVV) is investigating whether Google cleared over 300 hectares of forest in Muhos without a mandatory environmental impact assessment.
Google maintains that tree felling activities have been taking place in compliance with Forestry Act requirements, but the project has sparked controversy and calls for stricter regulation. A citizen's initiative demanding stricter regulation regarding data centre energy use and consequences for the environment gathered over 50,000 signatures in just three days.
