Google's 13-Billion-Euro Data Centre Investment Sparks Environmental Concerns in Finland
Finnish town Muhos is bracing for change as tech giant Google plans to build new data centres in the area, part of a 13-billion-euro investment over two years.
The project has sparked controversy, with concerns about environmental impact and energy consumption. According to Joni Pitkanen, a 36-year-old farmer, 'the project is so massive that it's basically hard to really grasp.'
Muhos mayor Kimmo Hinno sees the investment as an opportunity for the rural municipality, expecting thousands of workers during the construction period.
The Finnish Supervisory Agency is investigating whether Google cleared forest land without a mandatory environmental impact assessment. Meanwhile, Google claims tree felling activities have been taking place in compliance with Forestry Act requirements.
