Google's $62 Million Tracking Settlement Upheld by Appeals Court
A federal appeals court has upheld Google's $62 million privacy class action settlement. The settlement will see funds go toward a group of nonprofits instead of the millions of Google account users whose locations were surreptitiously tracked by the company.
The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit rejected arguments from some class members who said that they should receive a cut of the settlement money, even if it meant each member would only get a few cents based on the 247 million class members.
The trial court overseeing the settlement was correct in determining the most effective use of the funds, according to the appeals court. The court's decision effectively ends any possibility of individual payouts from the settlement.
