Google's Ad Tech Monopoly Reprieve Leaves Rivals with Real-Time Access
The remedies to Google's ad tech monopoly have been finalized after 17 months of speculation. The final outcome shows that Google still owns its ad exchange (AdX) and ad server (DfP), and did not have to sell the former nor open-source the auction logic in the latter.
Rival exchanges, including Index Exchange, PubMatic, OpenX, and others, will get real-time bid access to AdX through Prebid. This means publishers can run AdX auctions alongside other exchanges in a neutral environment, potentially leading to increased competition and lower win rates for Google.
Large, resourced publishers will benefit from the remedies as they will have access to historical and configuration data from DfP, along with data on every winning and losing bid across every AdX auction. However, smaller publishers may struggle to act on this information due to its complexity.
