Google’s AI Call Feature May Soon Handle Personal Chats
Google’s Gemini-powered Call for Me feature, which debuted on Pixel phones last month, initially focused on handling calls to local businesses and other errands. However, early signs suggest the tool may soon expand to include personal communications with family and friends. Android Authority spotted references to personal requests in early versions of Android software, hinting at potential updates.
The new options include examples like instructing the AI to call your mom to inform her of a delay or to call John to ask if he’s coming for dinner. These personal use cases appear alongside the original business-oriented examples, such as booking a restaurant or finding a dentist appointment. While it’s unclear if the feature will use your contacts, the use of names like 'Mom' and 'John' suggests Google aims to personalize the interactions.
Currently, Call for Me is limited to specific users over 18 based in the US and requires a Pixel 11 series device. Additionally, users need a Google AI subscription, costing $4.99 per month with AI Plus access. The feature also appears to be designed for short announcements rather than full conversations, making it useful for quick updates while driving or when busy.
Google has not officially confirmed these expansions, so an exact release date remains uncertain. The company’s marketing and support pages originally focused on everyday errands, but there’s no technical reason the tool couldn’t extend to personal communications.
