Google's AI Chips Blast Off into Orbit on SpaceX Rocket
Today marked a significant milestone in the space race as Google's AI chips blasted off into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The satellite, dubbed 'MVP,' contains four of Alphabet Inc.'s (GOOGL) AI chips, which are similar to those used in Google's Gemini chatbot.
The goal of this experiment is to test the feasibility of moving AI data centers off the planet and into orbit. Earth-based data centers face significant challenges, including high electricity costs and limited cooling capacity, making space a more attractive option for large-scale computing needs.
SpaceX Technologies Corp. (SPCX) has filed with the Federal Communications Commission to deploy up to 1 million computing satellites, targeting its first orbital AI deployments for late 2027. Elon Musk's company believes that space-based compute will be essential due to power availability and permitting problems on land.
