Google’s AI content payments raise concerns for publishers and antitrust scrutiny
Google has initiated a trial program where approximately 100 publishers are compensated for the use of their content in generating AI-driven responses. However, the payments vary widely, with some smaller media outlets receiving less than $1,000 over several months, while larger participants earn significantly more. Beyond the monetary concerns, publishers worry that users getting ready-made answers directly from Google may reduce traffic to their websites. This shift could impact the media industry’s revenue streams, as AI relies on fresh content that requires resources often funded through audience engagement and advertising.
As of October 1, Google has also halted its bug bounty program for open-source software vulnerabilities due to a surge in automated and mostly invalid submissions. Meanwhile, Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection suspects Google of abusing its dominant position during negotiations with local publishers over payments for displaying their content in Google Search, News, and Discover.
