Google's AI Feature Rolls Out to Docs Users: How to Disable It

Google's Gemini AI feature is rolling out to some users of Google Docs, but not everyone wants it. The feature shows up as a giant bar at the bottom of the screen, prompting users to click on it and enable its AI capabilities.

Fortunately, it's easy to hide the Gemini bar by clicking on the menu bar, then hovering over Bottom bar preferences and selecting Turn off. However, if you want to completely banish AI features from Google Docs, there are a couple of ways to do so.

One method involves changing a setting in Gmail, but this is only for personal accounts with an @gmail.com email address. For company-issued Workspace accounts, it's up to the administrator to decide which AI features users see.

Another option is to install a Chrome extension called Bye Bye Gemini, which removes all aspects of Google's AI from its productivity products, including Gmail and Drive.
