Google's AI Hiring Tools Raise Red Flags for Its Own Researchers
Google's AI team is caught in a paradox when it comes to hiring. The company uses its own AI tools to filter job applications, but some of its researchers don't want their resumes automatically screened out by these systems.
According to a document viewed by Bloomberg, Google DeepMind's AGI Safety and Alignment Team has set up a special form for candidates to fill out alongside their application. This is to ensure that a real human on the team will see their resume, rather than being filtered out by AI.
The document warns applicants that 'a non-trivial probability' of their CV being screened out incorrectly or taking too long to reach the team, and advises them to fill out the form to guarantee human review.
Google's Workspace team markets its new AI features as a way to save HR time by quickly creating job postings, evaluating resumes, and forecasting hiring needs. However, some companies' AI hiring systems have come under fire for potentially discriminating against candidates based on their names or other factors.
