Google's AI Mode Quietly Dominates Search Experience
Google's AI Mode has quietly become a central part of the search experience for millions of users. Since its introduction, Google Search usage has hit an all-time high, with over 1 billion monthly users interacting with AI Mode, rivaling the estimated number of ChatGPT users in May.
A recent Pew poll found that more Americans read AI summaries at the top of search engine results than use chatbots (60% to 49%). But when users enter AI Mode, they behave differently. They write longer queries and search for different types of information, such as essay ideas or financial advice. Crucially, they exhibit a high level of trust in AI Mode's answers.
The introduction of AI Overviews has transformed how users interact with Google Search. While some critics argue that AI Mode is threatening the business model of websites reliant on clickthrough ad revenue and optimized SEO strategies, Google argues that it provides more fulfilling experiences for users by giving them what they want faster and more directly.
