Google's AI Model Launch Priced to Double in the Future
Google's latest AI model, Gemini 4 Argon, has been launched at an introductory price of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. This price is set to double at some point in the future without a specified date. At this introductory rate, Argon matches OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra on Artificial Analysis's Intelligence Index, but only at 60% of the cost per task. However, when the standard price of $4 and $20 is applied, Argon costs about 22% more per task than Astra.
Google has a history of launching AI models with introductory prices that are later increased, without actually changing the model itself. The company's previous model, Gemini 3.7 Flash, had its introductory price expire on December 31, seven times longer than its own model's lifespan. This strategy allows Google to keep the price high and maintain a competitive edge in the market.
The new model, Argon, has already been used by thousands of Googlers and is expected to be rolled out to paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers soon. However, the lack of a specified end date for the introductory price raises questions about whether it will ever reach the standard rate of $4 and $20.
