Google's AI Overdrive Strangles Independent Media
The shift to digital platforms has decimated the independent media industry, which is struggling to adapt to Google's ever-changing algorithms and near-total monopoly on web search.
According to data from Axios, traffic to top news sites has plummeted over the past five years, with a 25% decline in direct traffic to the top 100 media sites over two years.
This is largely due to Google's introduction of AI Overviews at the top of search results, which prioritize engagement over legitimate news sites. The same year, Meta rolled out its proprietary AI assistant, further driving users away from news sites and towards chatbot summaries that often get important facts completely wrong.
