Google's AI Overviews: A Double-Edged Sword for Search and Publishers
Google's AI Overviews have transformed search results, giving the company unprecedented editorial control over what users read and know. The feature appears in about 13.7% of searches, with a higher rate for question-form queries and longer searches.
Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis found that credible sources are not always enough to guarantee accuracy, as about 11% of verifiable claims lacked support or contradicted cited sources. The team examined 61,212 citations across 98,020 verifiable claims.
The study also suggests that AI Overviews could threaten publishers' revenue, as users may rely on the summaries instead of visiting individual websites. In about half of the cited webpages, advertising was displayed.
