Google's AI Overviews Redirecting Traffic to Its Own Site

Google has introduced AI Overviews to its search bar, where users are presented with a summarized response from an AI chatbot before seeing a list of links. This change has been significant, and billions of people's browsing habits are shifting as they spend more time on Google.com. According to Google's vice-president of search, Liz Reid, this is the 'most significant upgrade of the Google Search experience ever.'

However, studies and website owners have found that people navigate less to sites beyond Google if an AI Overview provides a good enough answer, even if the bot cites the sites that feed it. This has led to large US media companies suing Google, alleging that AI summaries have redirected and reduced traffic to their sites, cutting into their revenue.

Google claims it has not seen a decline in aggregate traffic and that such accusations are based on 'flawed methodologies.' Reid wrote last year: 'Total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year.'
