Google's AI-Powered Contrail Reduction Trial Yields Promising Results

Google and Cathay Pacific have collaborated on an innovative approach to reduce contrails, those white streaks behind airplanes that trap heat in the atmosphere. Contrails account for about one-third of aviation's climate impact, but Google's predictive AI system has shown promise in reducing their formation.

In late 2025, Cathay crews used Google's guidance to fly at altitudes where contrails tend to form less frequently, and the trial resulted in a 40% reduction in warming impact. The system uses satellite imagery, meteorological inputs, and predictive AI to suggest optimal flight paths for pilots.
