Google's AI Strategy Shift: Hassabis Takes New Role, Dean Exits
Google's leadership has undergone significant changes as part of its effort to advance its artificial intelligence strategy. In an email to employees, CEO Sundar Pichai announced that Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis will take on a new role as Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet.
Hassabis' new position allows him to focus fully on actively shaping the future of artificial general intelligence (AGI), which he has described as a crucial aspect of humanity's progress. Pichai expressed his excitement for Hassabis, stating that he is 'truly his life's work and purpose.'
Jeff Dean, who has been with Google for 27 years, will be leaving the company to launch an independent public benefit corporation focused on accelerating discoveries in machine learning, science, and engineering. Pichai praised Dean's contributions, calling him a key figure in driving significant technology transitions at Google.
In other changes, Koray Kavukcuoglu will become Senior Vice President of Google DeepMind, overseeing Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. Pichai emphasized that these changes are designed to support Google's AI roadmap while continuing work on AGI, scientific research, and future AI products.
