Google's DeepMind Institute Tackles AGI Risks and Implications
Google has launched its DeepMind Institute to advance conversations on safely developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) and studying its implications for society. The institute aims to publish articles from researchers within Google and external experts to spark debate on responsible AGI development.
Shane Legg, co-founder and chief AGI scientist at DeepMind, will serve as managing editor alongside James Manyika, president of Research, Labs, Technology and Society at Google, and Demis Hassabis, co-founder and chair of DeepMind. They emphasize that the rapid pace of AI innovation suggests we're approaching AGI, a system with all human cognitive capabilities.
However, they also acknowledge challenges and risks associated with AGI, including cybersecurity and biorisks. They highlight the need for responsible development to ensure benefits outweigh risks. The institute's goal is to stimulate intellectual discussion on how to develop and use AGI safely.
