Google's DeepMind Undergoes Major Restructuring After Hassabis' Departure
Google's artificial intelligence division DeepMind has undergone significant changes after its founder and CEO Demis Hassabis stepped aside to take on a more advisory role.
Hassabis will now serve as chair of DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet, Google's parent company.
This move comes as Google attempts to catch up with industry leaders OpenAI and Anthropic in the AI space.
According to multiple sources, Hassabis has been spending less time on Gemini, Google's struggling frontier AI model, and more time working on questions of safety and what the arrival of AGI would mean for society.
Lila Ibrahim, DeepMind's Chief AI Readiness Officer, will now report to James Manyika, a senior Google executive, as part of the restructuring process.
