Google's Gemma Family Surpasses One Billion Downloads
Google's Gemma family of open models has surpassed one billion downloads, the company announced in a blog post. This milestone comes two years after developers began publishing variants of the model.
In that time, over 100,000 Gemma variants have been published by developers, according to Google. The company notes that while the download count is impressive, it's what the community is building with these models that truly matters.
Google also highlighted several notable applications of Gemma, including its use in NASA's Satlyt and Starcloud satellite systems for onboard image analysis and communication routing. In addition, the Indian government's health app, Aarogya Setu 2.0, has integrated Gemma to standardize medical reports.
Researchers at Yale and Google also built a model called C2S-Scale on Gemma that successfully discovered a novel cancer therapy pathway verified in living cells, according to Google.
The company has launched an official directory for the Gemmaverse, called Awesome Gemma, which will feature community projects, fine-tunes, tutorials, and developer tools. Ollama, an open-model runner, noted that Gemma is one of the most popular open models, with over 9 million developers using its services.
