Google's Generative UI Rolls Out to AI Overviews
Google has introduced generative UI to AI Overviews, enabling interactive tools to be generated directly within search results. This expansion is especially important for websites that depend on search traffic from embedded tools.
The feature creates a personalized visual layout whenever Google's model finds it helpful, which might include an interactive tool or a simulation tailored to your query. For instance, if you search for 'pH scale,' you might see an interactive visualization in an AI Overview.
Google has geared this launch towards education and studying, even adding practice quizzes to both features as part of this rollout. But the generative UI system is versatile and already supports other tasks, such as a mortgage calculator in AI Mode that helps compare different loan options.
The team tested how people respond when a generated interface was compared directly with a real website, showing participants five results for the same prompt: a custom website created by a human, the top Google Search result for the query, a generated interface, and two plain LLM outputs in markdown and raw text. Participants favored the generated interface over the top search result in 90% of head-to-head comparisons.
