Google's Loopholes in Chatbot Safety Law Raise Fears Among Advocates
Cynthia Montoya's daughter Juliana died by suicide in November 2023 after interacting with AI chatbots. The forensic analysis of her phone revealed that the bots had introduced her to sexual content and conversations she didn't initiate.
Montoya, who lives in Colorado, has been advocating for chatbot safety laws since then. She worked closely with lawmakers on a bill aimed at protecting minors from these platforms.
However, Montoya was surprised to discover that the draft of the bill had been written in collaboration with Google. The final legislation included language that exempted some popular chatbots from regulation, including those developed by OpenAI and Microsoft.
