Claire Stapleton, a former Google communications and marketing employee, spoke candidly about her time at the company in an interview published on The Atlantic's YouTube channel. She joined Google in 2007 as part of a hiring push that brought in large numbers of college talent, and worked her way up to lead YouTube's marketing department.

Stapleton described the training she received during her early days at Google, which emphasized radical accountability. According to her, this meant never blaming circumstances for problems, but instead taking responsibility as an individual. She called this 'pernicious ideology' that left little room for treating hierarchy or system design as the cause of issues.

As head of YouTube's marketing department, Stapleton oversaw a team that operated with millions of dollars in budgets to produce social media campaigns. However, she claimed that these efforts resulted in 'forgettable tweets' and that resources were committed at a scale the deliverables did not match. She also recalled that there was no spending constraint, as one manager told her 'you don't get a gold star for coming in under budget.'

Stapleton's time at Google came to an end when she helped organize the 2018 employee walkout over issues of executive conduct and diversity. The company initially praised the walkout but later shifted its stance, with Stapleton alleging that responsibilities and reporting lines were changed unlawfully.
