Google's Mobile Bet with Motorola: A Turbulent Journey
Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility in 2012 marked a significant expansion into mobile hardware for the tech giant. Founded in 1928 as Galvin Manufacturing Corporation, Motorola had been a pioneer in radio and communications equipment before diversifying into mobile phones and network infrastructure.
The company split into two entities - Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions - a year prior to Google's acquisition. This separation allowed Google to focus on acquiring the consumer-focused Motorola Mobility, which offered a path for further expansion into mobile hardware and a chance to bolster Android through Motorola's expertise.
Google retained around 15,000 patents after selling Motorola Mobility to Lenovo in 2014, while Lenovo acquired the handset business, brand portfolio, and over 2,000 patent assets. As of 2026, Motorola Mobility still operates as part of Lenovo's smartphone division.
Under Lenovo's ownership, Motorola Mobility initially faced challenges but was eventually able to turn its fortunes around through strategic planning and a shift in sales strategy.
