Google's Nick Fox Slams EU's Digital Markets Act for Degrading Search Experience
Google's Senior Vice President of Knowledge & Information, Nick Fox, expressed his disappointment and sadness over the changes made to Google Search in Europe due to the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The DMA has led to the biggest reduction in search quality in Google's 28-year history. According to Fox, these changes will result in a significant violation of European users' privacy as they will have to hand over their search query data to competitors.
Fox stated that he feels 'terrible' and 'sad' about degrading the product in this way. He explained that each small change adds up, making the overall Search experience significantly worse than anywhere else. For example, users can no longer check current prices on products or filter hotels by travel dates.
The DMA decision would require Google to hand over people's most private queries to other companies without sufficient anonymization. Fox emphasized that search queries are often about sensitive topics like health, finances, and families, which could be exposed to hackers and third-party misuse.
