Google's Pixel Themes Becomes Advertising Platform for Sponsored Theme Packs
Google introduced Pixel Themes last November as a way to enhance customization on its Pixel phones. However, instead of offering users creative freedom, it has become an advertising platform for Google.
The first theme packs were released in November and were based on the Wicked: For Good musical. These packs included custom wallpapers, app icons, lock screen clock designs, system accent colors, ringtones, and themed GIFs. However, they didn't add any new customization features, just bundled existing tools.
These theme packs were removed in January 2026 after a month-long promotion of the Wicked movie. Since then, Google has released more sponsored theme packs based on SpongeBob and Harry Potter franchises. These limited-time offers have sparked frustration among users who feel that Pixel Themes is being used as an advertising billboard.
Google's decision to prioritize advertising over customization has disappointed fans of the Pixel software. A proper theme engine could offer users a wide range of customization options, including icon packs for the Pixel Launcher. However, Google's execution has fallen short, and it remains to be seen if the company will change its approach in the future.
