Google's Pixel Watch 5 Introduces Advanced Breathing Emergency Detection

Google has introduced its latest smartwatch generation, the Pixel Watch 5, which comes equipped with advanced health features. One of the notable additions is Breathing Emergency Detection, a feature that can detect persistent drops in oxygen saturation and alert emergency services. This capability uses data from various sensors, including PPG, accelerometer, and barometer, to identify potential breathing emergencies.

The feature is not yet cleared by the FDA and will initially be available only in select European Union markets. It's also worth noting that Google has stated this feature is not intended for individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions and should not be used as a diagnostic or treatment tool.

In addition to Breathing Emergency Detection, the Pixel Watch 5 will come with other health features, including blood pressure and insulin resistance trends. These capabilities will be available through the Google Health app and can be accessed by users of Fitbit Air, Pixel Watch 3, Watch 4, or Watch 5 devices later this fall.

Google is grouping these new features under a category called Health Guardian, which aims to provide users with easy access to their health data and recommendations for improvement. The company has emphasized its commitment to accuracy in heart rate monitoring, which it claims has paid off with the introduction of more advanced features.
