Google's Project Suncatcher Aims for Orbit with Experimental Satellite Launch

Google's ambitious Project Suncatcher is taking its first step towards developing AI data centers in orbit. The company has partnered with Planet Labs to build an experimental satellite called MVP, which will be launched on October 1 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as part of the Transporter-18 rideshare mission.

The MVP satellite measures about the size of a refrigerator and contains four custom Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) AI accelerators from Google. These TPUs are capable of generating up to one kilowatt of power using solar panels. The spacecraft will test how these chips perform under radiation, vibration, and other space conditions.

Google plans to run Gemini models on the TPUs in short bursts of about 15 minutes before shutting down to allow the radiator system to dissipate heat. This testing is crucial for understanding the challenges of cooling hardware in space and ensuring that Suncatcher becomes a commercial product.
