Google's Project Suncatcher Blasts Off into Space
Project Suncatcher, a long-term research moonshot by Google, is set to embark on its first test in orbit. The mission aims to evaluate how Google Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) perform in space and explore whether space could host scalable machine learning infrastructure.
The team has developed a prototype satellite that will be launched into low Earth orbit as part of the Transporter-18 rideshare mission with SpaceX. In space, satellites can access near-constant sunlight, generating up to eight times more solar power than on Earth.
The project's goal is to ensure AI's profound benefits in key areas, such as healthcare and scientific discovery, can reach everyone far into the future. To achieve this, the team must overcome several engineering challenges, including hardware survival, radiation, and cooling in space.
