Google's Robotics Unit Open-Sources Infrastructure for Intelligent Robots
Intrinsic, Google's robotics unit, has open-sourced its foundational infrastructure for intelligent robots. The release of Intrinsic Core under a permissive Apache 2.0 license aims to democratize access to intelligent robotics. This move is expected to accelerate the development of physical AI in real-world industrial environments.
Intrinsic Core provides a reusable, software layer that offers basic infrastructure for physical AI. It includes building blocks such as Intrinsic Control, Pose Estimation, motion planning capability, and grasp planning function. These components enable robots to dynamically adapt their trajectory mid-movement, detect and handle parts, automate collision-avoidance path generation, and automatically adapt to object locations.
The company has also released the Open Machine Tending Solution, an open reference design for AI-powered CNC machine tending tasks. This solution supports modular customization for different hardware setups from major robotics manufacturers, including Universal Robots A/S and FANUC Corp.
