Google's Search Engine Usage Hits All-Time High During World Cup
Google achieved a major milestone during the recent World Cup match between Argentina and Egypt. The moment Argentina scored its winning goal, Google's search engine usage skyrocketed to unprecedented levels. This surpasses all prior records since Google first launched in September 1998.
Nick Fox, senior vice president of knowledge & information at Google, wrote on X that 'Google Search broke all prior usage records and saw its highest usage in history right after Argentina scored their winning goal in yesterday’s match!' The measurement is based on the number of search queries per second following Argentina's third goal.
According to Statcounter’s GlobalStats numbers, Google holds a market share of 91.25% in June 2026 for traditional search engines. However, when AI platforms are included, its share drops to roughly 80%, with OpenAI's ChatGPT capturing around 17-19%.
First Page Sage reported that Google dominates the large language model sector with approximately 77% of global digital queries but faces a significant threat from ChatGPT. The latter reached 1 billion monthly active users in May 2026 and holds about 17.9% of total digital queries. Google Gemini has also scaled rapidly to 750 million monthly active users, positioning it as a long-term competitor to ChatGPT.
