Google's Space-Based Data Centers Get Off the Ground

Google is preparing to launch an experimental satellite as part of its Project Suncatcher initiative. The fridge-sized satellite, which has the equivalent computing power of a single server, will be launched on October 1 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The goal of Project Suncatcher is to harness unfiltered sunlight in space to power AI data centers, reducing the need for electrical grids and minimizing pollution. However, experts warn that massive constellations of orbital data centers could have ecologically damaging effects, releasing atmospheric pollution and risking damage to the ozone layer.

Google senior vice president for research James Manyika likened the development process to creating driverless cars, which took 15 years to achieve. The company is initially limited to 15 minutes of operation in space before shutting down the chips to cool back down. By next year, Google plans to launch another pair of satellites and ramp up to a constellation of 80 satellites in close formation.
