Google's Thompson Center Delayed Until 2028 in Chicago

Google's highly anticipated redevelopment of the Thompson Center in Chicago has hit another snag. The tech giant announced that it will now open its doors in 2028, two years later than initially planned.

The project, which was first announced in 2022 with a targeted move-in date of 2026 and then shifted to early 2027, is expected to occupy at least 600K SF of the renovated 954K SF property.

While Google did not provide a reason for the latest delay, construction on the Helmut Jahn-designed building began in May 2024, with CBRE handling office leasing and Savills managing retail leasing.

The Thompson Center redevelopment remains a closely watched project in the Loop, with many viewing it as a potential boost to downtown activity. The delay will likely have an impact on the city's plans for office-to-residential conversion efforts along the LaSalle Street corridor.
