Govt Tells Microsoft to Build Data Centers Near Power Sources
The Indian government has advised Microsoft to build its future data centers closer to power generation sites rather than near coastal cable landing stations. This recommendation aims to reduce costs for both the company and the country, according to Electronics and IT Secretary S Krishnan.
Speaking at the launch of Microsoft's fourth India cloud region in Hyderabad, Krishnan said that locating data centers near power sources would be more economical. He added that the government will continue to facilitate faster approvals to meet the requirements of both the country and the world.
The new Hyderabad-based data center is part of Microsoft's USD 20.5 billion investment commitment to India's digital and AI infrastructure. Krishnan described the launch as significant for strengthening India's data centre and AI infrastructure, emphasizing the need for the country to access global technology while building domestic computing capacity.
