GPU Market Struggles with Unobserved Retirement Data
The AI infrastructure finance market is facing an unprecedented challenge due to the lack of observed retirement data for GPUs. In a recent episode of SemiAnalysis, host Jordan Nanos posed a question that highlights the complexities of underwriting terminal values for hardware with no recorded retirements.
Nanos pointed out that Nvidia's GPU fleet has not yet produced any retirement records, making it difficult to estimate residual values. This is in contrast to other asset classes like aircraft finance, truck leasing, and commercial real estate, where historical retirement data is used to anchor terminal value estimates.
The absence of observed retirements means that underwriters are working with assumptions rather than distributions. According to Nanos, the GPU market has not yet produced a retirement record, which raises questions about the accuracy of pricing models.
