Greece Lures Back Former London Bankers with Tax Incentives

Konstantinos Sarafopoulos, Alpha Bank's chief risk officer, returned to Greece in 2021 after over 20 years in the UK. He spent 17 of those years at JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Sarafopoulos found a changed landscape when he came back: recession and austerity were gone, attractive tax packages were being rolled out, and bureaucracy was easing due to digitalization.

The traffic in Athens wasn't so positive, according to Sarafopoulos, 'But that's maybe testament to the country's recent success.'

He's not alone; around 120 people have made the journey from London and other finance hubs back to Greece. They've been dubbed 'Ithacans,' after the wine-dark seas between Greece and Britain.
