Greece's stock market has made significant strides in recent years, and its latest achievement is a major milestone. The country's return to the top flight of European markets has opened the door for some of its biggest companies to join the region's benchmark stocks index.

Nine stocks will enter the Stoxx Europe 600 on September 21, including four banks: National Bank of Greece SA, Eurobank SA, Piraeus Bank SA, and Alpha Bank SA. The reclassification of Greece as a developed market takes effect on the same date, making its companies eligible for inclusion alongside names from 17 other countries.

The addition to the Stoxx Europe 600 is a testament to Greece's economic recovery since the debt crisis forced the stock exchange to close for five weeks in 2015. Improved public finances and a revived banking sector have lured investors back, with the Athens Stock Exchange General Index surging 186% since the country regained investment grade status in 2023.

The four banks joining the Euro Stoxx Banks index will likely attract significant investment flows. Analysts at JPMorgan Chase & Co estimate that total flows into the nine stocks should amount to over $1.1 billion. The Greek benchmark has already been one of the best performing European markets this year, with its banks accounting for over 40% of the index.
