Ground Zero Gets Final Office Tower as World Trade Center Rebuild Nears Completion
The rebuilding of the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan is entering its final phase, nearly 25 years after the September 11 attacks. On July 9, 2026, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for 2 World Trade Center, the last major office tower planned for the complex.
The 1,226-foot tower will have three open-air terraces and six landscaped corner gardens, designed by Foster + Partners. American Express announced in February 2026 that it would anchor the 55-story, 2-million-square-foot tower and move up to 10,000 employees into the building once it opens.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani framed the project as a major economic driver, saying it will create roughly 3,200 jobs and inject about $6 billion into the city's economy. The tower is expected to open in 2031.
